But like veterans of Dark Souls, veteran monster hunters take justifiable pride in their hard-earned skills. Either: 'I tried for a few hours, got frustrated, and gave up.' Or: 'I was frustrated for a few hours, but then it all clicked and I couldn't stop playing!'Ībsolutely, you need to build up a lot of muscle memory to excel, and there's a lot of esoteric meta-gaming and also gear-optimising to get lost in. From gamers who have tried it, you hear the same two stories. Then do it all again! But this is no walk in the park, is it Hex? Harvest their body parts to craft better armour and weapons. Track, pursue, and slay fantastical beasts. Venture out into a gorgeous, unspoilt fantasy wilderness. Perhaps! At its core this is still the same Monster Hunter gameplay loop: Equip the best gear you can. Maybe Generations is the one that will finally 'go large'? I think that mainstream acceptance is coming but ever so slowly. But here, it's still seen as a bit of a niche, cult game. Monster Hunter! It started on PS2 about twelve years ago and it's played by millions of people in Japan. ![]()
